Update — August 26, 2026: Today is the last day. Stumpy's serves its final day at 138 S. Wilcox today. Posted hours are 11am to 8pm, but on a last day that is a plan, not a promise. Go at lunch rather than late — we were in Tuesday night and the kitchen was already working through the last of its stock. After tonight the Wilcox oven is cold and the search for a new address is the whole story. Asked on Facebook whether they plan to open elsewhere, manager Gretchen Norton replied that they are trying and it will "just take a few months."
Stumpy's Pizza, a Castle Rock original for more than 25 years, has to leave its longtime home at 138 S. Wilcox Street. Rivers Church bought the building, and the pizzeria is now looking for a new place to land.
Rivers Church extended their lease through the end of August 2026, and the team has now set a final day: Wednesday, August 26, posted hours 11am to 8pm. After that, the Wilcox oven goes cold.
The short version: Stumpy's isn't failing. It's being displaced by a building sale, its last day at 138 S. Wilcox is Wednesday, August 26, and it's hunting for a new spot. The manager says a return will "just take a few months." We'll update this page when a new location is announced.
What's happening
Rivers Church, which launched in Castle Rock in September 2024, has been working toward the section of strip mall next to the Philip S. Miller Library — 136, 138, and 140 South Wilcox Street — for a permanent downtown home. The church says on its own website that it closed on a building in downtown Castle Rock on May 20, 2026 — and Rivers is now acting as Stumpy's landlord, having extended the pizzeria's lease through the end of August. Earlier, CBS Colorado reported the church was under contract for the three addresses from two different owners, needed roughly $4.5 million, and had fundraised about 70 percent of it. The church's offices are already located at 140 S. Wilcox.
That sale displaced the longtime tenants in that strip, Stumpy's among them. When CBS Colorado covered the deal before it closed, the church said it hoped to reach an agreement that worked for everyone. What happened instead is what the tenants had been bracing for: Rivers extended Stumpy's lease through August, and the pizzeria is moving out at the end of it.
What Stumpy's said
In a late-June message shared around town, the Stumpy's team asked neighbors to come in and support them through their final weeks at the current location:
"We don't have an exact final day. So please come in and support us in our final weeks. We are still looking for a new location but sadly we have not found one yet. Rivers Church has extended our lease until the end of August. Thank you everyone who has come out and supported our staff in the final weeks at 138 S. Wilcox."
So: serve through Wednesday, August 26, then relocate — with the new address still to be determined.
What we know about a return
Stumpy's has not announced a new address. But in a Facebook exchange after the closing news went around, a customer asked whether they plan to open elsewhere. Manager Gretchen Norton replied that they are trying, and that it will "just take a few months."
That is a softer read than earlier coverage, in which the restaurant's management told CBS Colorado the business could not afford to move and might have to close for good. Treat it as intent rather than a commitment: no site, no lease, and no reopening date has been made public. We will update this page the moment there is one.
