You don't have to drive to the mountains to catch fall color — Douglas County's scrub oak and cottonwoods put on a real show every October. But if you want aspen gold, some of the best drives in the state start right out our back door. Here's where to go close to home, the best day-trips from here, and when to time it.

When do the colors peak?
Fall color in Colorado is all about elevation. Up high — the aspen passes — peak usually runs from mid-September to the end of September. Down here, Douglas County's Gambel oak (scrub oak) and cottonwoods peak later, roughly late September into mid-October. The exact weekend shifts a week or two each year with the weather, so if you're chasing peak, check a live fall-foliage prediction map before you commit.

Castlewood Canyon State Park

Roxborough State Park

The showstopper. Gambel oak — a listed park habitat — turns fiery red against the red-rock hogbacks, one of the most photogenic fall scenes on the Front Range. Parking is limited and fall weekends fill early, so plan on a morning start.
Glendale Farm Open Space & Trail

A gentle 1.6-mile loop that winds up around the oaks to high-prairie caprock overlooks with Front Range views that seem to run forever. Dog-friendly on leash.
Legacy Trail at Gateway Mesa
4678 E. Highway 86, Castle Rock · free
The forested north side of the 276-acre Gateway Mesa Open Space — dense mixed spruce, fir, and Ponderosa pine with scrub-covered slopes and Castle Rock conglomerate rock formations, per the Town's own trail page. The Legacy Trail runs 2 miles and is rated moderate to difficult. A different, cooler feel than the open mesa.
Lincoln Mountain Open Space
7333 Jones Road, Larkspur · free
Two trails from one trailhead: the lower Palmer Divide Ranch Trail (4.5 miles round trip, flat caprock footing) and the Lincoln Mountain Trail (4.2 miles round trip, an almost 400-foot climb through Gambel oak to the top) — join them for an 8.3-mile outing. The county calls the summit view of Pikes Peak, the Rampart Range, and the eastern plains breathtaking, and it is. The new Evans Homestead area and trail opened here in July 2026.
Fly'n B Park
2910 Plaza Drive, Highlands Ranch · free
Low-key and easy — a 10.3-acre Metro District park with a fishing pond and two docks, ringed by big trees dropping leaves all over the park. Good for an afternoon with little kids.
Best aspen day-trips from Douglas County
When you want the gold, these are the closest and best drives from here. Go early on a weekday if you can — fall weekends in the high country get busy.
Devil's Head — the closest aspen, and it's in Douglas County
Up above Sedalia on the Rampart Range, the Devil's Head trail climbs through aspens to a historic fire-lookout tower — real gold color without a mountain pass, about an hour from Castle Rock (the last stretch is dirt Rampart Range Road). Kenosha Pass — the closest big-grove goldmine
Take US-285 southwest through Conifer toward Fairplay. Kenosha Pass has huge aspen groves right off the highway and along the Colorado Trail — the easiest big-aspen payoff from Douglas County, roughly a 1.5–2 hour drive. It's popular for a reason; arrive early.
Guanella Pass
A high paved pass out of Georgetown with dense aspen groves on both sides and 14,000-foot peaks overhead. One of the most reliable aspen displays within day-trip range of the metro.
Peak to Peak Scenic Byway
Colorado's oldest scenic byway — established in 1918 — runs 55 miles up to Estes Park past Golden Gate Canyon, the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, and the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park. A full-day loop with color the whole way.
Golden Gate Canyon State Park
The closest of the bunch — 12,000+ acres of forest with aspen stands and the Panorama Point overlook. A good option when you want color plus a short hike without a long drive.

Go on a weekday morning if you can; fall weekends there are packed.
The county and town open spaces (Glendale Farm, Gateway Mesa, Lincoln Mountain, Fly'n B) are free. The two state parks — Castlewood Canyon and Roxborough — require a Colorado state parks pass or a daily vehicle fee. Roxborough's parking is limited and fills early on fall weekends, so arrive early.
Layers (mornings are cold, afternoons warm), water, a full tank of gas if you're driving a pass, and patience for traffic on peak weekends. Storms build fast in the afternoon in the high country, so go early. Leash your dog on the open-space trails.
