You don't have to drive to the mountains to catch fall color — Douglas County's scrub oak and cottonwoods put on a real show every October. But if you want aspen gold, some of the best drives in the state start right out our back door. Here's where to go close to home, the best day-trips from here, and when to time it.
When do the colors peak?
Fall color in Colorado is all about elevation. Up high — the aspen passes — peak usually runs from mid-September to the end of September. Down here, Douglas County's Gambel oak (scrub oak) and cottonwoods peak later, roughly late September into mid-October. Roxborough State Park

The showstopper. Gambel oak turns fiery red against the red-rock hogbacks — one of the most photogenic fall scenes on the Front Range. The lot is small and the park closes the gate when it fills, so get there early on a weekend.
Glendale Farm Open Space & Trail

A gentle 1.6-mile loop that winds up around the oaks to high-prairie caprock overlooks with Front Range views that seem to run forever. Dog-friendly on leash.
Legacy Trail at Gateway Mesa

The forested north side of Gateway Mesa — dense mixed spruce, fir, and Ponderosa pine with scrub-covered slopes and Castle Rock conglomerate rock formations. A different, cooler feel than the open mesa.
Lincoln Mountain Open Space

Two 4-mile loops — one along the bottom through trees and caprock, one up top where you can see the color running all the way from Pikes Peak to Longs Peak. The climb earns the view.
Flying B Park
2910 Plaza Drive, Highlands Ranch · free
Low-key and easy — a small fishing pond ringed by big trees dropping leaves all over the park. Good for an afternoon with little kids.

When you want the gold, these are the closest and best drives from here. Go early on a weekday if you can — fall weekends in the high country get busy.
Devil's Head — the closest aspen, and it's in Douglas County
Up above Sedalia on the Rampart Range, the Devil's Head trail climbs through aspens to a historic fire-lookout tower — real gold color without a mountain pass, about an hour from Castle Rock (the last stretch is dirt Rampart Range Road). Kenosha Pass — the closest big-grove goldmine
Take US-285 southwest through Conifer toward Fairplay. Kenosha Pass has huge aspen groves right off the highway and along the Colorado Trail — the easiest big-aspen payoff from Douglas County, roughly a 1.5–2 hour drive. It's popular for a reason; arrive early.
Guanella Pass
A high paved pass out of Georgetown with dense aspen groves on both sides and 14,000-foot peaks overhead. One of the most reliable aspen displays within day-trip range of the metro.
Peak to Peak Scenic Byway
Colorado's oldest scenic byway runs about 60 miles from Black Hawk to Estes Park past Golden Gate Canyon, the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, and the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park. A full-day loop with color the whole way.
Golden Gate Canyon State Park
The closest of the bunch — 12,000+ acres of forest with aspen stands and the Panorama Point overlook. A good option when you want color plus a short hike without a long drive.
