Highlands Ranch Schools: DCSD, Charters and How to Enroll

Every address in Highlands Ranch has an assigned neighborhood school inside one of four high school feeders, and every family can apply anywhere else in the district. Here is how that works, with the dates, the documents and every school in town, including the three that are new this fall.

I am not a parent, so this is the guide I would want if I were one: no ratings-site opinions, just how Douglas County School District actually works, pulled from the district's own pages on September 29, 2026. Highlands Ranch is the district's biggest community and it shows: four high schools, four middle schools, fourteen elementary schools and four charters have Highlands Ranch-area addresses, and 2026 was a year of change here, with three consolidated elementaries opening in August and sixth graders moving up to middle school. The good news is you do not have to figure out which school is yours. The district tells you, and then lets you choose anyway.

How DCSD Works

An assigned school for every address, and open enrollment on top of it.

Douglas County School District runs 45 elementary schools, 9 middle schools, 9 high schools, 6 alternative schools and 20 charter schools across the county, for about 61,000 students. Your address puts you in an attendance zone, and the school for that zone is what DCSD calls your neighborhood or address-assigned school, the school you are assigned to based on your residence address, where no application is needed. Plug the address into the district's School Locator Map and you have your answer before the moving truck is booked. The district organizes Highlands Ranch into two regions: East Highlands Ranch, the Highlands Ranch High School and Rock Canyon feeders, and West Highlands Ranch, the Mountain Vista and ThunderRidge feeders.

Then there is open enrollment. You can request a different DCSD school, including one in another town, on a space-available basis; the district calls that your school of choice, and placement there is not guaranteed. For the 2027-28 school year, Round 1 runs from 8am on Monday, November 2, 2026 to 4pm on Tuesday, December 1, 2026; results arrive at 8am on December 8 in the EngagED parent portal and you accept by 4pm on December 15. Round 2 runs from 8am on Friday, January 22, 2027 to 4pm on Monday, August 2, 2027 and is first come, first served, with Round 1 waitlists ahead of it. Round 1 applicants are prioritized by grade level under district policy, and those not placed go on an annual prioritized list that carries priority over Round 2.

Local tip: Two calendars matter if you are moving mid-year: the district's open enrollment windows above, and your own closing date. Your assigned school will take you whenever you arrive; a specific other school will only take you if it has room.

Enrolling a New Student

Four steps, all online, from the district's Student Enrollment page.

1. Find your school
2. Register online
Online Registration (OLR) in Infinite Campus: the district's OLR portal
3. Upload documents
Parent or guardian government-issued ID, the student's government-issued birth certificate, immunization records, and one proof of residency (a signed lease, a signed purchase agreement, a warranty deed, property tax notice or Assessor page, or a verified proof-of-residency letter), as PDF or JPEG
4. Watch your email
The district warns that missing, incorrect or illegible documents will delay your submission; then the school follows up

The Four High Schools

Two regions, four feeders, from the district's own list. Opening years from HRCA's timeline and the schools' own pages.

ThunderRidge High SchoolOpened 1996 (West region)9-121991 W Wildcat Reserve Parkway · 303-387-2000

Highlands Ranch High School opened in 1987 as the community's first, ThunderRidge in 1996 together with Ranch View Middle (HRCA's timeline lists them as a combined campus), Mountain Vista in 2001 and Rock Canyon in 2003. Rock Canyon's address on McArthur Ranch Road is listed by the district as Littleton 80124 and by the school as Highlands Ranch; the mailing city is a quirk of the postal map, not the attendance zone. STEM School Highlands Ranch, a charter, also runs a high school (see below).

Local tip: The feeder notes in these tables are only the ones a district or school page states outright: ThunderRidge publishes its list, and Redstone Elementary's site names the Rocky Heights and Rock Canyon chain. For Cresthill and Mountain Ridge the School Locator is the source, not this page.

Three names are brand new this year. Golden Ridge Elementary (1305 Timbervale Trail) is the consolidation of Saddle Ranch and Eldorado; Mountain Peak Elementary (10200 Piedmont Drive) combines Heritage and Summit View; Silver Spruce Elementary (6585 Collegiate Drive) combines Acres Green and Fox Creek. If a listing or an older map still shows one of the six old names, this is why. The district lists Arrowwood, Bear Canyon, Coyote Creek, Sand Creek, Stone Mountain and Wildcat Mountain with Littleton or Lone Tree mailing addresses; they are the Highlands Ranch-area schools all the same.

Where the district page does not print a grade span, we have not guessed one; the school's own site has it, along with its lottery dates. The district also lists CloverLeaf Enrichment School (3350 Summit View Parkway, 720-271-6804) among its alternative programs here. The private option most people ask about is Valor Christian High School at 3775 Grace Boulevard (303-471-3000), which HRCA's timeline says opened in 2007.

School Buses

Who rides and what it costs, from the district's transportation FAQ.

DCSD bus service is for students at their assigned neighborhood school; the district's FAQ says transportation is not available to students who are open enrolled. Rides are $1 each way per student under board policy, billed quarterly to the student's MySchoolBucks account, with waivers for students with a transportation IEP and families on the Free and Reduced program. For 2026-27 the district says the annual bus pass is not available because of rolling route cancellations, so plan on the per-ride charge. Passes are requested at engaged.dcsdk12.org under Manage Transportation.

FAQ

Does Douglas County School District assign a neighborhood school in Highlands Ranch?

Yes. DCSD calls it your neighborhood or address-assigned school, the school you are assigned to based on your residence address, where no application is needed. Find yours with the district's School Locator Map. You can also request any other DCSD school through open enrollment, where a seat is not guaranteed.

What are the high school feeders in Highlands Ranch?

Four high schools serve Highlands Ranch, and the district groups them into two regions: East Highlands Ranch (the Highlands Ranch High School and Rock Canyon feeders) and West Highlands Ranch (the Mountain Vista and ThunderRidge feeders). ThunderRidge lists Ranch View Middle plus Coyote Creek, Golden Ridge, Stone Mountain, Trailblazer and the Roxborough schools as its feeders; Redstone Elementary says it, Wildcat Mountain, Timber Trail and Buffalo Ridge feed Rocky Heights Middle and Rock Canyon. For any other school, the School Locator is the answer.

Which Highlands Ranch schools changed in 2026?

Three consolidated elementary schools opened in August 2026: Golden Ridge Elementary (1305 Timbervale Trail) combined Saddle Ranch and Eldorado; Mountain Peak Elementary (10200 Piedmont Drive) combined Heritage and Summit View; Silver Spruce Elementary (6585 Collegiate Drive) combined Acres Green and Fox Creek. The same year, Highlands Ranch sixth graders moved from elementary to middle school, so the elementaries here are K-5 and the middle schools are 6-8.

When is DCSD open enrollment for 2027-28?

Round 1 runs from 8am on Monday, November 2, 2026 to 4pm on Tuesday, December 1, 2026; results arrive by 8am on December 8 in the EngagED parent portal and offers must be accepted by 4pm on December 15. Round 2 runs from 8am on Friday, January 22, 2027 to 4pm on Monday, August 2, 2027 and is first come, first served, with Round 1 waitlists ahead of it.

Which charter schools are in Highlands Ranch?

Four DCSD charters have Highlands Ranch addresses: Ben Franklin Academy (2270 Plaza Drive), Platte River Academy (4085 Lark Sparrow Street), SkyView Academy (6161 Business Center Drive) and STEM School Highlands Ranch (8773 S Ridgeline Boulevard, elementary through high school). Each runs its own application, separate from the district's open enrollment rounds.
