The candy shop on Third Street has quietly changed hands, and the most visible difference is one you'd only notice standing inside it.
Sugar Spoon Candies & Ice Cream at 313 Third St in downtown Castle Rock has new owners. Longtime owner Gayle sold the shop to Megan and her husband, who also run Rock Liquors at 350 Third St, across the street.
What changed
Not much, deliberately — and that's the headline for anyone who has been going there for years.
Prices stayed the same. The new owners told us that directly, and it's the first thing regulars tend to ask when a small shop turns over.
The ice cream is out where you can see it. This is the real change inside. Sugar Spoon scoops Magill's, but the freezer used to sit far enough back that you could walk in, buy fudge, and leave without ever registering that the place does ice cream at all. It's now up front.
The shop is open seven days a week, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. That's a real expansion — the old schedule had it closed Mondays and not opening until 1 p.m. midweek, which caught out more than a few people wandering downtown on a weekday afternoon.

Still the same shop otherwise
The counter is unchanged: homemade fudge, hand-dipped chocolates, a nostalgic candy wall, and Magill's ice cream with rotating flavors. We came out with Nerds and bubble gum, which tells you what kind of candy wall it is — the stuff you grew up on, not a curated shelf of imported novelties. We skipped the ice cream, and only because we'd already had some off the Glacier Ice Cream truck at Castle Rock's Oktoberfest, a few blocks up at Wilcox Square, that afternoon. It holds a 4.9 rating across more than 320 Google reviews, among the highest of any business we list in Castle Rock.
One thing worth looking for while you're in there: an antique Herring's Patent Champion safe stands open against the wall, next to a carved wooden bear advertising "Bear Hugs 5¢."
If you haven't been in since the handover, it's worth knowing the hours are longer and the ice cream is easier to find than it used to be.
