Moving to Castle Pines, Colorado
Castle Pines Schools: DCSD, Charters and How to Enroll
Every address in Castle Pines has an assigned neighborhood school, two district elementaries and two charters sit inside the city, and the middle and high school the district names are in Highlands Ranch. Here is how that works, with the dates, the documents and every school in town.

I am not a parent, so this is the guide I would want if I were one: no ratings-site opinions, just how Douglas County School District actually works, pulled from the district's, the schools' and the City's own pages on September 30, 2026. Castle Pines is a city of families (22.9 percent of residents are under 18, per the Census), and the school map is a little different here: two district elementary schools and two charters have Castle Pines addresses, and the middle and high school the district names are a few minutes north in Highlands Ranch. The good news is you do not have to figure out which school is yours. The district tells you, and then lets you choose anyway.
How DCSD Works
An assigned school for every address, and open enrollment on top of it.
Douglas County School District runs 45 elementary schools, 9 middle schools, 9 high schools, 6 alternative schools and 20 charter schools across the county, for about 61,000 students. Your address puts you in an attendance zone, and the school for that zone is what DCSD calls your neighborhood or address-assigned school, the school you are assigned to based on your residence address, where no application is needed. Plug the address into the district's School Locator Map and you have your answer before the moving truck is booked; the district notes that boundaries can shift to accommodate growth and balance enrollment.
Then there is open enrollment. You can request a different DCSD school, including one in another town, on a space-available basis; the district calls that your school of choice, and placement there is not guaranteed. For the 2027-28 school year, Round 1 runs from 8am on Monday, November 2, 2026 to 4pm on Tuesday, December 1, 2026; offers appear at 8am on December 8 in the parent portal and you accept by 4pm on December 15. Round 2 runs from 8am on Friday, January 22, 2027 to 4pm on Monday, August 2, 2027 and is first come, first served. Round 1 applicants who are not placed go on an annual prioritized list that carries priority over Round 2.
Local tip: Two calendars matter if you are moving mid-year: the district's open enrollment windows above, and your own closing date. Your assigned school will take you whenever you arrive; a specific other school will only take you if it has room.

The District Schools in Castle Pines
The two on the district's list with a Castle Pines address, from the district's and the schools' own pages.
| School | Grades | Address |
|---|---|---|
| Buffalo Ridge ElementaryDistrict elementary; "A HERD" values on its own site | K-5 | 7075 Shoreham Drive, Castle Pines · 303-387-5575 |
| Timber Trail ElementaryProject based learning; the elementary the district names for The Canyons | K-5 | 690 W Castle Pines Parkway, Castle Pines · 303-387-5700 |
Buffalo Ridge Elementary on Shoreham Drive is a K-5 whose own site sums up its values as "A HERD": academic excellence, honesty, empathy, respect and dedication, with art, music, physical education and library on top of the classroom. Timber Trail Elementary on Castle Pines Parkway is a K-5 built around project based learning, where students apply what they are learning to real-world problems, with a gifted and talented program and clubs from choir and robotics to chess; the district's page for The Canyons names it as that neighborhood's elementary. Both schools print a Castle Rock mailing address with the 80108 ZIP on their own sites, which is a post office quirk the City is working on, not a sign they are somewhere else.
The Middle and High School Next Door
The two Highlands Ranch schools the district names for The Canyons.
| School | Grades | Address |
|---|---|---|
| Rocky Heights Middle SchoolThe middle school DCSD names for The Canyons | 6-8 | 11033 Monarch Boulevard (Highlands Ranch 80130 on its own site; Littleton 80124 on the district list) · 303-387-3300 |
| Rock Canyon High SchoolThe high school DCSD names for The Canyons; 30-plus AP courses | 9-12 | 5810 McArthur Ranch Road (Highlands Ranch 80124 on its own site; Littleton on the district list) · 303-387-3000 |
One district page settles the question most people ask. DCSD's real-estate page for The Canyons says the neighborhood is served by Timber Trail Elementary, Rocky Heights Middle School and Rock Canyon High School, and The Canyons' own site says the same. Rocky Heights is a grade 6 to 8 comprehensive middle school on Monarch Boulevard; Rock Canyon's own site lists more than 30 AP courses, concurrent enrollment for college credit, career and technical education, more than 100 clubs and a 20-hour community service requirement to graduate. Both print Littleton on the district's lists and Highlands Ranch on their own, which is the same ZIP quirk in the other direction.
Local tip: The feeder notes in these tables are only the ones a district or school page states outright, and the district publishes them for The Canyons, not for every street west of I-25. For any specific address, the School Locator is the source, not this page.
The Two Charters in Town
Public and tuition-free, authorized by DCSD, each with its own application. Both have Castle Pines addresses.
American Academy, Castle Pines
A tuition-free K-8 charter public school with three campuses (Castle Pines, Lincoln Meadows and Motsenbocker in Parker), a STEAM emphasis and KindiePrep for ages 3 to 5; admission is an online lottery waitlist. aak8.org
DCS Montessori
A DCSD charter on the district's elementary and charter lists; its own calendar runs from elementary through middle school, with campus tours by reservation. dcsmontessori.org
Where a page does not print a grade span, we have not guessed one; the school's own site has it, along with its lottery dates. The district's charter list runs 20 schools countywide, and every charter runs its own application, separate from the district's open enrollment rounds. The City's community information page names the district, American Academy and DCS Montessori as the schools serving Castle Pines.
School Buses
Who rides and what it costs, from the district's transportation FAQ.
DCSD bus service is for students at their assigned neighborhood school; the district's FAQ says transportation is not available to students who are open enrolled. Rides are $1 each way per student under board policy, with fees waived for students who have transportation in their IEP and for families on the Free and Reduced program. For 2026-27 the district says the annual bus pass is not available because of rolling route cancellations, so plan on the per-ride charge.
FAQ
Douglas County School District. DCSD calls the school your address puts you in your neighborhood or address-assigned school, where no application is needed, and you find it with the district's School Locator Map. You can also request any other DCSD school through open enrollment, where a seat is not guaranteed. The old idea that DCSD is choice-only with no assigned school is wrong.
Four on the district's lists carry a Castle Pines address: Buffalo Ridge Elementary (7075 Shoreham Drive, K-5), Timber Trail Elementary (690 W Castle Pines Parkway, K-5), American Academy's Castle Pines campus (6971 Mira Vista Lane, a K-8 charter) and DCS Montessori (311 Castle Pines Parkway, a charter). There is no district middle or high school inside the city, which is normal here and why the assignments run into Highlands Ranch.
DCSD's own page for The Canyons says the community is served by Timber Trail Elementary, Rocky Heights Middle School (11033 Monarch Boulevard) and Rock Canyon High School (5810 McArthur Ranch Road), and The Canyons' site says the same. For an address west of I-25, the district does not publish a neighborhood page, so run it through the School Locator before you buy.
Two. American Academy's Castle Pines campus at 6971 Mira Vista Lane is a tuition-free K-8 charter public school with a STEAM emphasis and an online lottery waitlist for admission, per its own site. DCS Montessori at 311 Castle Pines Parkway is a DCSD charter whose calendar runs from elementary through middle school. Both run their own applications, separate from the district's open enrollment rounds.
Round 1 runs from 8am on Monday, November 2, 2026 to 4pm on Tuesday, December 1, 2026; offers appear in the parent portal at 8am on December 8 and must be accepted by 4pm on December 15. Round 2 runs from 8am on Friday, January 22, 2027 to 4pm on Monday, August 2, 2027 and is first come, first served, with Round 1 waitlists ahead of it.
