Four automated external defibrillators are now available around the clock at Highland Heritage Regional Park in Highlands Ranch, Douglas County announced Oct. 22, 2026.
The AEDs sit in outdoor SaveStations that visitors can use 24 hours a day. The stations are built to protect the devices from harsh weather and keep them within the temperature range they need to operate, according to the County.
Where to find them
Douglas County lists the AEDs at three spots around the park:
- Near the west fields drop-off zone
- At the group picnic shelter and playground
- At the east entrance to the amphitheater and synthetic soccer field
"When someone experiences sudden cardiac arrest, every second matters," the County's announcement says.
Who donated them
The AEDs were donated by the Ed Walsh Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit founded by Douglas County resident Kara Baker after her father died of sudden cardiac arrest while attending his granddaughter's soccer game in Highlands Ranch. The foundation works to widen public access to AEDs at outdoor community sites.
Baker said her father died of sudden cardiac arrest just outside a school where an AED was locked inside, inaccessible during the emergency. Her message now: "a locked door should never stand between someone and a chance at survival."
Douglas County Commissioner Kevin Van Winkle: "Something as simple as knowing where to find an AED can make a difference in an emergency."
How to use one
Anyone can use an AED, even without medical training, according to the County. Call 911, turn the device on, and follow its voice prompts. The AED walks the user through each step and determines on its own whether a shock is needed.
