The first of what organizers say will be at least four butterfly-wing murals is now painted on a wall in a downtown Castle Rock parking lot, the opening piece of a new public art project inviting more downtown businesses to join in.
The mural sits at 4th Street and Jerry Street, on the east side of a building next to Dapper Barbershop, painted on a tan stucco wall between two reserved-parking signs. Its wings are filled with small Castle Rock scenes and symbols: the Colorado flag, red rock formations, a deer and coyote, a tabby cat, houses, a tree and a snowman. People (and at least one dog) have already been stopping to stand inside the wings for photos, the point of the design.
Susie Barnhart, who's organizing the project, posted the finished mural to the "Everything Castle Rock" Facebook group on Nov. 3, 2026: "The first of the interactive murals in Downtown Castle Rock is completed! Created and painted by Castle View National Art Honors Society students! Come take your picture! 4th and Jerry." That's the National Art Honor Society chapter at Castle View High School. She tagged the project #YouCompleteMe_Art.
A second mural is already going in
Barnhart's post said a second mural was being installed this week at Life At Home, the downtown gift and home-décor shop. Asked in the comments where the rest would go, she said: "there will be four originally. We are looking for more Downtown businesses to join in!!"
She also shared a draft of the project's map, a flyer titled "You Complete Me, Downtown Castle Rock Participatory Art Map," carrying Visit Castle Rock branding. It shows a grid of planned mural locations, including Life at Home, Emporium, Goldie Links and P&T Bank, alongside spots still marked "Future location." Barnhart described it as "a draft of the locations to be located on the Chamber website." As of Nov. 4, 2026, it hadn't been posted there yet.
One commenter compared the idea to a similar wing mural they had photographed years ago in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, writing that the Castle Rock version would "become a favorite feature for our downtown area."
How downtown businesses can join
Organizers haven't published a formal sign-up process yet; Barnhart's comments are the only public call so far, inviting downtown businesses to reach out about hosting a wing. The draft map carries Visit Castle Rock branding, so visitcastlerock.org is the clearest place to watch for it going live, alongside the Downtown Castle Rock business directory on DougCo Social.
