About

πŸ“° We hiked it. Read our full guide: Lost Canyon Ranch Open Space Is Now Open in Castle Rock β€” every trail, both trailheads, and what to know before you go.

Lost Canyon Ranch Open Space opened to the public July 13, 2026, and it is the largest open space the Town of Castle Rock has ever acquired. The 681-acre property has roughly 10 miles of hiking trails winding through rolling grasslands, mature mixed coniferous forest, exposed hoodoo rock formations and dramatic canyon cliffs. The steep terrain was carved by Willow Creek cutting through the wide Lost Canyon, with side canyons formed by spring-fed drainages. An additional five miles of trail are under construction and expected to open later in summer 2026.

What To Expect:

πŸ₯Ύ About 10 miles of hiking trails across color-coded loops
πŸͺ¨ Hoodoo rock formations and dramatic canyon cliffs
🧭 A trail connection into Castlewood Canyon State Park
🐻 Wildlife including rattlesnakes and black bears
🚻 Portable restrooms at both trailheads
🚲 Bikes permitted on roadways only, never on trails

Important Information:

    – NO PETS. Dogs and horses are not permitted anywhere on the property.
    – No drinking water on site. Bring plenty of your own.
    – Cell service is limited throughout the property.
    – Most trails are rated moderate or difficult, with steep grades, rock steps and cliff edges.
    – Still an active construction site during the phased opening. Yield to crews.

πŸ“ Local Insights

🚫 No Dogs, Seriously: This is the rule that catches people out. Pets, including dogs and horses, are banned everywhere on the property to protect wildlife habitat. It is not a leash rule. Leave them at home, or head to Castlewood Canyon State Park instead, where leashed dogs are welcome.

πŸ…ΏοΈ Pick the Right Trailhead: Creekside Trailhead is the first one you reach and has only 19 spaces, so it fills fast. Cattleman's Trailhead, further east up the main road, has 125 spaces and is the better bet on a weekend.

🧭 Easier Options Exist: Most trails here are moderate to difficult with steep grades and cliff edges. If you want a gentler outing, take Willow Creek Path from Creekside or Pronghorn Path from Cattleman's.

πŸ’§ Bring Water: There is no drinking water on site, cell service is spotty, and the exposed sections get hot. Plan your route before you lose signal.

πŸ§‘β€πŸŒΎ Trail Ambassadors: Volunteer Trail Ambassadors are often at the trailheads on weekends with maps and directions.
