Castle Rock Historic Preservation Month 2026: Trolley Tours, Walking Tours, and a Month-Long Scavenger Hunt

May is Historic Preservation Month in Castle Rock, and the Town of Castle Rock and the Castle Rock Historical Society and Museum are running free trolley tours, a downtown walking tour, a tea fundraiser, and a month-long scavenger hunt across the Town's historic sites — all in May 2026.

The timing connects two larger anniversaries: America's 250th birthday and 150 years of Colorado statehood (1876–2026). Castle Rock's own preservation story sits inside both.

Downtown Castle Rock Walking Tour — Saturday, May 30, 10:30–11:30 a.m.

A free 45-minute guided walking tour of Downtown Castle Rock, hosted by the Castle Rock Historical Society and Museum. The tour walks through the Town's founding-pioneer story and its most recognizable historic buildings.

  • Start: The Courtyard on Perry Street, 333 Perry St.
  • End: Castle Rock Museum, 420 Elbert St.
  • No reservations required.

The Society offers this tour once a month from May through September — so if you miss May 30, it returns in June.

The Castle Rock Museum itself

The Museum lives inside the 1875 Denver & Rio Grande Railroad depot at 420 Elbert St — meaning the building is itself a piece of Castle Rock history. Inside: photographs, documents, and mementos covering the Town's story from its founding through today.

Self-guided options

If May 30 doesn't work, the Town offers a self-guided walking tour map any day of the year. Per the Town's official Walking Tour Map page, the map covers two areas:

  1. Historic Downtown Castle Rock
  2. The Craig and Gould Neighborhood — described by the Town as the area with the highest concentration of historically significant structures in Douglas County.

The interactive map is at CRgov.com/HistoryWalks.

For kids

The Town has produced Historic Preservation coloring and activity sheets for kids, available at participating Downtown restaurants.

Where to find official info

At a glance

Historic Preservation Month coordinates four guided experiences in May 2026 — a month-long scavenger hunt, free trolley tours on May 2, the Victoria's Tea fundraiser on May 16, and the free downtown walking tour on May 30 — plus the self-guided HistoryWalks map and kids activity sheets. The trolley tours and walking tour are explicitly free per the Town; Victoria's Tea is a paid fundraiser supporting the Castle Rock Historical Society and Museum.

The May 30 downtown walking tour is the easiest starting point: free, no reservation required, 45 minutes, finishing inside the Museum so you can keep exploring.
