Camping Near Douglas County, Colorado

By Connor Tien, DougCo Social · Updated June 2026

You don't have to fight mountain traffic to sleep under the stars. Some of the best camping on the Front Range is right out past Sedalia in the Rampart Range, plus a handful of family-friendly options a short drive in any direction. Here's where to go — from dispersed forest sites to a full-on cabin resort — and what to know before you load up.

I just drove out to Devil's Head to hike the fire lookout, and the drive out alone is a preview of the whole scene: tents tucked into the pines, hammocks strung between trees, and dirt bikers everywhere along Rampart Range Road. This stretch of Pike National Forest is genuinely close — and genuinely good. If you've been driving past Douglas County to camp in the mountains, you've been skipping some of the best, least-crowded camping around.

The local star: Rampart Range & Devil's Head

Out past Sedalia in Pike National Forest, the Rampart Range Recreation Area is the closest real forest camping to Castle Rock — a mix of dispersed sites and developed campgrounds, wrapped in hundreds of miles of trails.

Rampart Range dispersed camping

Designated, numbered dispersed sites line Rampart Range Road (roughly $22–$33 a night). About a third can be reserved on Recreation.gov; the rest are first-come, first-served. No water — pack in, pack out. It's also the heart of the area's off-road and dirt-bike trail network.

Devil's Head Campground

Developed · first-come, first-served · ~$18/night

A developed campground with water and pit toilets, and the trailhead for the Devil's Head Fire Lookout — the last staffed fire lookout on the Front Range, up a roughly 1.4-mile climb and a staircase to the tower. Camp here and hike it at sunrise. See Devil's Head Campground.

Flat Rocks & Indian Creek

Two more developed campgrounds in the same area with restrooms, drinking water, and graded sites — Flat Rocks (tents and RVs up to ~30 ft) and Indian Creek. Both are good first-come backups if Devil's Head is full, with the camp host based at Flat Rocks.

Want hookups, a pool, or a lake? These round out the options, all an easy drive from Castle Rock, Parker, or Highlands Ranch.

Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park — Larkspur

Just off I-25 toward Monument, this is camping with the comforts cranked up: full RV hookups, cabins, two heated pools, hot tubs, mini golf, and pickleball, plus a packed activity calendar. More family resort than campground — the one thing it doesn't offer is tent camping.

Chatfield State Park

Around 197 campsites (many full-hookup), flush toilets, showers, and a dump station, wrapped around Chatfield Reservoir — paddleboarding, fishing, boating, and miles of trails. The easy, reliable family pick. State Parks pass or daily entrance fee required.

Cherry Creek State Park

About 140 campsites open year-round, with showers, laundry, a dump station, and reservoir recreation. Closer in for Parker and Lone Tree campers. State Parks pass or daily entrance fee required.

Lone Rock Campground

About an hour from Castle Rock on the South Platte River — 15 tent/RV sites on gold medal trout waters. The only campground on this stretch that takes RVs and reservations, so it fills fast in summer. No hookups or dump station.

Know before you go

  • Check fire restrictions first. Summer Stage 1/Stage 2 restrictions can ban campfires outright — a fire ring doesn't mean fires are allowed that week.
  • Know first-come vs. reserve. Devil's Head, Flat Rocks, and Indian Creek are first-come, first-served; some Rampart dispersed sites and the state parks take reservations on Recreation.gov or CPW.
  • Pack water for dispersed sites. No potable water at the Rampart dispersed sites — bring plenty, and pack out everything you pack in.
  • It's hot, dry, and high. Sun protection, extra water, and a layer for the cool nights go a long way out here.
